I guess I should explain a bit about how Avon and Cally interact. I haven't really gone into detail about it before.
When Avon * talks * to her, she doesn't actually read his mind. What he does is send his thoughts out and she picks them out. It is similar to what she does with projection but not quite the same. With Cally, she * projects * her voice into his mind.
What he is referring to here is the reading of his mind, which requires her to enter it and pick up his thoughts and memories. At the moment, esp after the previous night, she is very close to being able to do that. This part of it is under his control because of his natural mental barriers.
